Welcome to the second edition of our online Donington Report. The Donington Report is a proud institution for our business as the Report has been produced on a quarterly basis since the founding of the Company. We received a number of compliments for our first online edition and this has allayed any fears we might have had about moving away from the hard copy version to this new format.
Three unrelated but connected news items in recent months have brought home to me the critical importance of ensuring that organisational human resource processes are enabling effective people development, support and ensuring that fundamental values in the workplace are being respected.

back to top Economic and Labour Market Trends
September brought some better news for those Australians searching for full time work (at least from a purely statistical perspective) with the official national unemployment figure published by the ABS down to 5.1%.
The IMF Country Report for Australia, released in October, also painted a positive picture of the current state of the economy asserting that we are recovering from the GFC on the back of strong policy stimulus and the high demand for our mining exports, especially from China.
The mainstream media seems to broadly concur with this upbeat outlook. Certainly in looking at those stories that traverse both the economy and the labour market, there seems to be an emerging consensus that the financial crisis is, locally speaking, now a non-issue. GFC related themes have been replaced with issues like the perennially popular “skill shortages” stories.
As is always the case, beneath the positive headline figures resides a more complex picture with different developments and trends exerting sometimes asymmetrical influences across sectors and regions.

back to top Career Dialogue - Room for Improvement!
In the last edition of the Donington Report we asked readers to participate in a very short survey on their experiences of career discussions with their own manager and with the members of their team. The results of that survey have now been collated and interestingly, the outcomes closely mirror what we hear anecdotally from members of the HR Community.

back to top Outplacement Industry Survey Winner
Donington recently conducted a market survey on the outplacement industry, to get a post GFC view from the HR community on the role and perceived value of outplacement services. We appreciate the great response we had to the invitation to participate in the survey, and congratulate Sarah Robertson from Westpac (pictured receiving her prize from Nan Dow of Donington), who won the draw for a one year membership of SHRM.
The findings from this survey will be published in coming issues of the Donington Report.
